We all have dark rooms in our house and usually in the north facing side of the house. Instead of turning your house into Blackpool illuminations why not get a few sky tubes/sun tunnels installed and save money long term.

Dark rooms can make people depressed, look dull, and people tend to feel cold and down in them. Sun light is always better than artifical light when doing jobs, reading or just in general.

It appears, through years’ long studies of people who live in sunnier climates and people who are exposed to sunlight through their work situations, that sunlight can actually decrease risk of colon and breast cancer.

In another study, patients who were put in hospital rooms that were sunny requested less pain medication than patients in windowless rooms. Whether the pain is lessened by the sunlight or the patients’ awareness of their pain levels decreased during the study is unclear.

Sunlight provides the body with the means to produce Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps the body in various biological functions: It promotes calcium absorption, which in turn deters bone loss; it may help maintain a healthy immune system; it could possibly be a part of the process of cell differentiation.

Wondering how Sky Tubes look as a cross section?

This is from a company called Tubzzz and show a cross section of a sky tube. Some times you get a solid tube from your roof and like below you can get a flexible tube to fit around joists etc. Sky tubes come in different sizes depending on how much light is needed. 12″ 16 ” 20″ etc .

Half the amount of Lights for Sky Tubes

In our office it’s not too dark with the lights off but if we replace half of the light fittings with sky tubes it would be bright enough. The costs of saving of only having to fit half the light fitting would pay for the Sky Tubes at the point of install, sono waiting years to get your money back.The electric bill would be cut back too with only half the lights been used. We have about 20 x 180 watt light fittings so it’s like boiling a kettle or 2 all day.Replace half of them or more and the savings would be huge.

Sky Tubes for your roof let the sun in to rooms

In the UK, the Skytube is still an unknown technology and I feel if people were shown the advantages and the whole benefits of sky tubes they would be more widely bought.

The building sector industry and companies in it such as Westbridge Homes should be encouraged to make them a standard spec for new houses, then out line the savings and reduction in the owners carbon foot print.

Just buying a house and having an en-suite which is in the centre of the house it has no natural light or windows. The room then relies on electric lights which cost money to run and increase carbon output. I feel that the en-suite would be an perfect room to use a sky tube in as you have to still use an electric light during daylight hours when its bright sunshine outside and you shouldn’t be really using lights when sun light is shining on the roof of the house.
